  • BRITISH MARITIME LAW ASSOCIATION, (BMLA) - The British Maritime Law Association was founded in 1908. Its purpose is and always has been to promote the study and the advancement of British maritime and mercantile law: to promote and consider with foreign and other maritime law associations proposals for the unification of maritime and mercantile law in the practice of different nations: to afford opportunities for members to discuss matters of national and international maritime law: to collect and circulate amongst its members information regarding maritime and mercantile law and to establish a collection of publications and documents of interest to members.
  • Canadian Maritime Law Association - An organization composed primarily of practicing maritime lawyers and other persons interested in the shipping and maritime industry.
  • COMITE MARITIME INTERNATIONAL ::: The Comite Maritime International is a non-governmental international organization. Its object is to contribute by all appropriate means and activities to the unification of maritime law in all its aspects.
  • International Maritime Organization (IMO) - In 1948 an international conference in Geneva adopted a convention formally establishing IMO (the original name was the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization, or IMCO, but the name was changed in 1982 to IMO).  The IMO Convention entered into force in 1958 and the new Organization met for the first time the following year. The purposes of the Organization, as summarized by Article 1(a) of the Convention, are "to provide machinery for cooperation among Governments in the field of governmental regulation and practices relating to technical matters of all kinds affecting shipping engaged in international trade; to encourage and facilitate the general adoption of the highest practicable standards in matters concerning maritime safety, efficiency of navigation and prevention and control of marine pollution from ships".
  • International Maritime Law Institute  (IMLI) - The IMO International Maritime Law Institute is an international centre for the training of specialists in maritime law and the development and dissemination of knowledge and expertise in the international legal regime of merchant shipping and related areas of maritime law and the general law of the sea. Special emphasis is given to the international regulations and procedures for furthering the purposes and objectives of the International Maritime Organisation as a specialised agency of the United Nations.
  • International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea - The court established by UNCLOS to adjudicate disputes under the Convention.
  • International Court of Justice - Cour internationale de Justice ::: The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, La Cour internationale de Justice est l'organe judiciaire pricipal de l'Organisation des Nations Unies.
  • Hague Conference on Private International Law - Conference de la Haye de Droit International Privé - The Hague Conference is an intergovernmental organization that works toward the progressive unification of the rules of private international law. It has been responsible for a significant number of treaties in this area. (See the International Conventions page of this guide.)
  • International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) - International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) is an independent intergovernmental organisation with its seat in the Villa Aldobrandini in Rome. Its purpose is to examine ways of harmonising and co-ordinating the private law of States and of groups of States, and to prepare gradually for the adoption by the various States of uniform rules of private law.
  • International Joint Commission (IJC-CMI) ::: The International Joint Commission is an independent binational organization established by the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909. Its purpose is to help prevent and resolve disputes relating to the use and quality of boundary waters and to advise Canada and the United States on related questions.
  • Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand - An association catering for all persons and organizations, both lawyers and non-lawyers, interested in maritime law issues
  • Maritime Law Association of South Africa - The South African MLA is the professional association of maritime lawyers in SA. Its membership is open to practising maritime lawyers, academics and those in the shipping industry having an interest in maritime law.
  • Maritime Law Association of the United States - The Maritime Law Association of the United States (MLA) was founded in 1899. The objectives of the Association shall be to advance reforms in the Maritime Law of the United States, to facilitate justice in its administration, to promote uniformity in its enactment and interpretation, to furnish a forum for the discussion and consideration of problems affecting the Maritime Law and its administration, to participate as a constituent member of the Comité Maritime International and as an affiliated organization of the American Bar Association, and to act with other associations in efforts to bring about a greater harmony in the shipping laws, regulations and practices of different nations.
